Rocktail Bay Package - An Extension to Your Safari
An extension to the unspoiled Indian Ocean Coast! R ocktail Bay Lodge is the perfect place to unwind after your Southern African safari. Situated in a World Heritage Site within South Africa's Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve, Rocktail Bay offers the chance to experience a side of Southern Africa that most tourists miss – the unspoiled Indian Ocean coast and its incredible natural beauty and abundant wildlife. The beach here, rivaled by few on earth, is reason alone for a visit. Pristine and undeveloped, it was named as one of the 10 best in the world by Outside Magazine. While Rocktail isn't traditional big game country, it is home to an array of fascinating wildlife, including massive leatherback and loggerhead turtles, a variety of whales and dolphins, interesting antelope species, hippos and many species of rare and endangered birds.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Johannesburg
Transfer to the Grace Hotel in the stylish suburb of Rosebank.

Day 2: Johannesburg / Rocktail Bay
Fly to Richards Bay and then board a charter aircraft for the flight to Rocktail Bay. After a short, scenic drive from Rocktail Bay Lodge's private airstrip to the lodge, you will have a chance to relax and explore the beach and surrounding environs. This beautiful camp is discreetly nestled among forested coastal dunes and is connected to the beach by a boardwalk that winds through a dune forest. The camp is comprised of ten wood and thatch “treehouse” chalets that are raised up on stilts into the forest canopy. Each chalet has en suite and outdoor showers as well as private restroom facilities. There is also a lounge/pub and dining area where meals are served under thatch or under the giant natal mahogany trees. There is a swimming pool and sun deck for those who want to relax around the lodge.

Days 3 & 4: Rocktail Bay
The activities at Rocktail Bay are many and varied. The diving and snorkeling here are excellent and the camp has its own full service dive center that also caters to the casual snorkeler (fins, masks, and wet-suits are available for a minimal charge). The area is known for its pristine reefs, excellent visibility and diverse marine life, including whale and ragged tooth sharks, turtles, dolphins and reef fish. The height of turtle activity occurs between October and March. During this time, guests can choose to participate in evening turtle drives on the beach and can even assist with a fascinating on-going research project designed to help conserve the massive leatherback and loggerhead turtles that come ashore here to nest and lay their eggs each year. There is a good chance to see humpback whales migrating along the coast from April through October with June, July and August being the peak months. Other popular activities include visiting the local community, where guests can see how people live as subsistence farmers, visiting local hippo pools, nature walks where the area's unique flora and fauna are explored, fly-fishing and simply relaxing on the beach or in a hammock with a good book.

Day 5: Rocktail Bay to Johannesburg or Cape Town
This morning you will be transferred to the airstrip for the charter flight to Richards Bay, where you will connect with your onward flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town. You may also want to consider spending a night at nearby Ndumo Lodge, one of South Africa's most acclaimed birding destinations and a great place to see both black and white rhino and other big game species.
