A Classic Safari to the Best of East Africa, including the Serengeti, Masai Mara and Ngorongoro Crater!
When it comes to the sheer magnitude of wildlife, there is no question that East Africa reigns as king! Wildebeest migrate by the millions, elephants lumber through game parks in herds, and flamingos grace the shores of the Rift Valley in such numbers that entire lakes turn into seas of pink. Our specially designed Kenya & Tanzania Explorer uniquely allows nature enthusiasts to observe the majesty of the traditional “Big Five ” – elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, and leopard – as well as an abundance of predators, scavengers and bird life, in the hidden, untouched areas where very few tourists venture. And, since we've arranged two special itineraries for this trip, each one taking advantage of the best wildlife viewing spots at that particular time of year, we give ourselves the very best chance for magnificent, yet secluded, East African wildlife sightings.
Itinerary
Lewa Downs Rhino Sanctuary
Lewa Downs is one of Africa’s true private conservation successes. White and black rhino have thrived here. Other wildlife includes Grevys zebra, leopard, elephant, sitatunga and gerenuk. Since this is a private reserve, you can participate in both day and night game drives and safari walks with Mt.Kenya looming in the distance. Additional activities include camel and horseback riding safaris and visits to local communities.
Amboseli
Elephants abound here and to see these creatures against the snowy backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro is captivating indeed. This mosaic of alternate wet and dry lands is also home to cheetah, leopard, wildebeest, lesser kudu, eland, giraffe and one third of Kenya’s 1,080 bird species. Tortillis camp offers a private experience with seventeen thatched tented lodgings set on a wooded hillside. Another option is Ol Kanjau with just 6 tents. Masai
Masai Mara
The Masai Mara is actually the northern portion of the Serengeti Plains, where animals cross the Kenya and Tanzania border in search of the best grazing. From our tented camp, we take morning and afternoon game drives, presenting us with fantastic opportunities for big game viewing. We will see most of the plains animals: Thompson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, impala, wildebeest, topi, zebra, giraffe and buffalo. The Masai Mara is most famous for lions, which can be seen hunting in the early mornings and evenings and resting under trees during the day. We have selected a remote and intimate tented camp, providing a personal and authentic safari experience.
Ngorongoro Crater
Sometimes called the eighth wonder of the world, this vast unflooded crater was once a large volcano that scientists say may have been larger than Mt. Kilimanjaro! The 600-meter deep crater hosts more than 30,000 animals. Due to its permanent source of fresh water, it is home to the largest concentration of non-migratory wildlife as well as the largest long-tusked bull elephants in all of Africa. While here, we stay on the crater rim and drive into the crater daily for game drives. Rhino are often spotted and we will likely see lion, elephant and hyena as well as hippo and eland.
The Serengeti – Luxury Mobile Tented Camp
Simply stated, the Serengeti offers the ultimate classic African safari experience! Our use of luxury mobile camps is the only way to be assured of being where the animals are, not a small feat in a park the size of Rhode Island. We will spend some days entirely in the bush, with a picnic lunch, and other days with very early morning game drives and an afternoon siesta, returning for game drives in the late afternoon. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas, wildebeest, zebras, vultures and raptors, honey badgers and mongoose are often seen. This is Africa at its best!
Tarangire National Park
One of Africa’s last remaining wilderness frontiers, Tarangire National Park boasts tens of thousands of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and elephant, all moving to the rythms of nature in this eerily remote reserve. During the months of July to November, these animals spread across the Great Rift Valley floor and settle down to graze the wetlands of Tarangire. The luxury camp we have selected provides a remote and wild African safari experience and an authentic and classic feel for this wild continent or choose a mobile camp for an even more intimate experience.
