Quark Expeditions
Quark Expeditions has been one of the leading innovators and operators of expedition cruises, especially in polar regions, since 1991. The company has pioneered and developed a concept of fantastically adventurous journeys in first class comfort on powerful, polar icebreakers. This concept is unique and many "First Ever" passenger voyages have been successfully operated: the first North Pole voyage, the first transpolar voyage through the North Pole, the first Circumnavigation of Antarctica, the first "Far Side" of Antarctica voyage, the first Weddell Sea voyage, the first Northeast Passage and the first Circumnavigation of the Arctic are all part of this tradition. Quark Expeditions is the only company in the world operating powerful, polar icebreakers for expedition cruises. Accompanying these voyages is a dedicated and experienced staff of expedition leaders, naturalists and lecturers who will share with you their enthusiasm and knowledge of the region. All our voyages are planned and conducted to minimize any impact or disturbance to wildlife and fragile habitats. As a member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), Quark Expeditions supports a policy which requires its members to operate environmentally responsible expeditions and follow all internationally agreed regulations of conduct ashore. Quark Expeditions follows a common sense code of conduct on all of its voyages and ensures that the ship, Zodiacs and helicopters are operated in an environmentally responsible manner. We are all privileged visitors - and committed to the future of these extraordinary, icy realms. Names such as Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton, Franklin, Peary and Nansen are synonymous with the Golden Age of Exploration and, thanks to the polar climates, elements of the past have been well preserved. Viewing these historical sights is a great experience and worthy of care and respect. Quark Expeditions understands this and ensures that all our passengers are fully briefed before any visits take place. Our philosophy is to become known as the specialist in comfortable but adventurous expedition cruises by offering interesting itineraries to unique polar destinations in an environmentally responsible manner.

OUR VOYAGES

Antarctica Cruise Expeditions:

Antarctica is said to be the coldest, driest and windiest place on earth, but that does not describe its attractions as a tourist destination. This immense wilderness is a fabulous and virtually pristine paradise for wildlife with an incomparable scenery of mountains, snow and ice. It is a privilege to visit this awe-inspiring continent and to experience the special magic that has lured explorers, adventurers and scientists for more than two centuries and - most recently - world travelers.

Taking advantage of the long days at the height of the Austral summer, November through to March, we explore vast colonies of penguins, observe some of the great whales, watch hundreds of seals resting lazily on ice floes, and marvel at the extraordinary variety of shapes, sizes and color of icebergs. The vistas are magnificent, with towering glaciers and dramatic cliffs that drop almost vertically into the sea. Everything in Antarctica appears to be built on a scale that is larger than life.

Join us on one of our exciting programs of voyages to the "White Continent".

Explore Antarctica - Small Ship Expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula 2005- 2006

In the 2005-2006 season, with Quark Expeditions you will have more time ashore, a greater choice of expedition dates and a choice of experiences that range from relaxed to highly active. And that is on one ship during the same voyage, perfect for partners who want to travel together, but have different activity level needs.
The atmosphere on board our small ships is like an intimate bed and breakfast, with the amenities of a hotel, including bar service and three professionally prepared meals a day.

Ultimate Antarctica 2005 - 2006

According to Webster, ultimate is defined as "the best or most extreme of its kind." That is why we use the word ultimate to describe our icebreaker expeditions to Antarctica. They are the best and the most extreme of their kind. Our "Lords of Antarctica" itinerary explores the realm of emperor penguins, the only birds on Earth that breed on the frozen sea in 24 hours darkness of an austral winter. The "Wonders of the Ross Sea" itinerary is an exploration of the continent's biodiversity, in some richer than anywhere else in the world. By joining "The Great Antarctic Explorers" expedition you become part of a history making attempt to attain the most southerly latitude ever reached by ship.

Arctic Cruise Expeditions:

The Arctic is one of the most remote and fascinating regions of the world, and an area which has only ever been accessible to the privileged few. Join us on one of our voyages of exploration and adventure to the Arctic.

Sail into spectacular fjords surrounded by towering mountains and glaciers illuminated by the 24-hour sun; thrill at the experience of your powerful icebreaker tackling the pressure ridges, hummocks and ice floes of this northern world; land by expertly-piloted helicopter in areas inaccessible by Zodiac; discover historic sites of polar exploration; and call at lands rarely visited before.

Polar bears, musk ox, walruses, whales and other marine wildlife, roam the icy seas and landscapes of the North. Only icebreakers like ours can take you to these remote and fascinating Polar Regions.

Join us on one of our exciting programs of voyages to the North Pole.

The North Pole 2005

The icebreaker, Yamal, is one of the very few of the world's most powerful ships to have made the fantastic journey all the way to 90°N - the North Pole. This voyage to the "Top of the World" is the ultimate journey of adventure and discovery.

Arctic Adventures 2005

Once again we have designed yet another series of fascinating voyages of discovery aboard the polar icebreaker, Kapitan Khlebnikov. Our first voyage of the season, Russia's Far East & Wrangel Island, will give you the chance to be among the few to have visited Wrangel Island, a world famous nature reserve, whilst our Northwest Passage - The Amundsen Route voyage will bring alive the endeavours of those who charted the Arctic. Journey to Tanquary Fjord, Ellesmere Island and Greenland where we will visit the stunning glaciers and valleys of this region and call on some of the most remote communities in the world.

The High Arctic: Canada and Greenland 2005

Demand for High Arctic expeditions always exceeds capacity, so we are excited to announce the addition of one more voyage in 2005 - The High Arctic: Canada & Greenland, August 29 to September 11. Discover the contemporary life of indingenous peoples in two Arctic communities, Resolute, Canada and Qaanaaq, Greenland. Delve into the past on Beechey Island.
